Head to head

Nvidia vs Intel, side by side

These two show how fast a technology lead can change hands. Nvidia designs the graphics-style chips that turned out to be perfect for artificial intelligence, and outsources their manufacture - it now sits at the centre of the AI boom. Intel makes the processors inside most PCs and servers AND runs its own factories, a hugely expensive model it is trying to modernise while defending its core market from Nvidia, AMD and others.

On our factor screen it looks strongest on growth and quality, and weakest on value.

Intel

The bolder figure is simply the larger of the two - higher is not automatically good (a higher P/E means more expectation in the price; a higher beta means bigger swings).

How they differ

Nvidia is roughly 11x the size of Intel by market value. On our factor screen Nvidia currently screens higher on quality and income, while Intel screens higher on momentum. Nvidia pays a dividend (0.5%) while Intel pays little or none.

Descriptive only - how the two compare on today's data, never a verdict on either.

Nvidia, in one line

The undisputed king of the AI chips data centres need to train and run their models.

Intel, in one line

Intel is a global technology giant that designs and manufactures the computer chips that power everything from personal laptops to massive data centres.

What to weigh

If dividend income matters to you, the yields differ (0.5% Nvidia vs 0.0% Intel). These are facts to understand, not a verdict - read each full explainer before deciding anything.

Common questions

Why did Nvidia overtake Intel so dramatically?

The workload changed. AI training runs best on Nvidia's parallel chips, so data-centre spending flooded its way just as Intel struggled with manufacturing delays. It is a textbook case of a new use case rewarding a different design.

Why does Intel owning its factories matter?

Running chip factories ('fabs') costs tens of billions and must stay full to pay off. Nvidia avoids that by outsourcing manufacturing; Intel carries the cost and the risk, which is central to why their margins and fortunes have diverged.
