Big tech stocks, explained

A handful of US technology companies have grown so large they move whole markets. But 'tech' is not one thing: some make phones, some rent out computing power, some design the chips everything else runs on, and their fortunes do not all rise and fall together.

Their size and popularity also means high expectations are already baked into the price, which is its own kind of risk. Each name below links to a full explainer of what the company does and what to weigh up.

Why should I care?

A few US tech giants now drive a huge slice of global returns, so even a plain index-fund investor already owns a lot of them. Knowing what each one actually does helps you understand why your portfolio moves the way it does.

How this list is put together

Every US-listed company in the Almanac that reports in the Technology sector and is worth $100 billion or more, listed A to Z. This used to be a list of 18 tickers typed by hand, which made it our shortlist rather than a category.

Size is not quality: a larger company is not a better one, it is a bigger one. Every figure is in dollars, because this collection is a single market - mixing currencies in one picture would compare two different things.
